I am Artistic Director of theatre company and gender equality research organisation Power Play, Fringe First Winners. Power Play has a track-record of creating career-changing platforms for female creatives: we have given six writers their first full-length commission, they have all gone on to commissions with top arts organisations from the BBC, to the Old Vic. We develop platforms for multidisciplinary work presented in unusual performance venues, from a domestic flat to online.
2018 POWER PLAYS
Our POWER PLAYS created an immersive platform for female creative work at the Edinburgh Fringe.
☞ Shortlisted for the Sit Up Awards
☞ Winner of the Filipa Bragança Award
☞ Winner of a Scotsman Fringe First Award
☞ "Tackling the power dynamics of sex in the confines of the city’s tenements leads to rich, unsettling drama" - Sally Stott, The Scotsman
☞ "definition of important, powerful theatre" - To Do List
Alongside this, we ran an impact project into gender inequality in Fringe Theatre, comprising an activist campaign supported by Times Up UK (Times Up spearheaded the #metoo global movement) and a multivariate study into gender at the Edinburgh Fringe Women on the Fringes, revealing the enormous 60% gender earnings gap. This was released in The Scotsman and The Stage. The study was presented to ACE by industry leaders, helping to put the case that achieved a commitment to ACE's first ever Edinburgh Fringe funding pot.
☞ “But what’s fascinating about the Power Play research into gender inequalities is not just what it reveals about the fringe but how, in providing a snapshot of what happens in Edinburgh, it raises wider questions about British theatre, gender and opportunity.” - Lyn Gardner, The Stage
